Buying Live Edge Furniture? Make Sure the Wood is Kiln Dried
This summer, I attended various markets and events from the Hamptons to the Hudson Valley. From art shows to farmers markets, I spoke with thousands of people about our work at Sound Designs, collecting wood from downed and fallen trees to create furniture and home decor.
Two conversations, in particular, stood out. Both individuals had purchased live edge pieces from major retailers, only to later discover that their new furniture was infested with beetles. In one case, the homeowner noticed small piles of dust underneath their table and grew concerned. The problem eventually spread to their floorboards, prompting them to call an exterminator.
It turns out that the slabs used to make the table were not kiln dried. This oversight led to a nightmare scenario that could have been easily avoided.
Why Kiln Drying Matters
Kiln drying is a critical process that involves heating wood in a controlled environment to reduce its moisture content. Here’s why it’s essential for your live edge table:
Stability and Durability: Kiln drying stabilizes the wood, minimizing the risk of warping, splitting, or cracking over time. Since kiln-dried material is dried closer to ambient moisture levels of indoor spaces, it is less likely to warp or crack.
Prevents Mold and Insect Infestation: Wood that is not properly dried can be susceptible to mold growth and insect infestation. Kiln drying kills any insects or larvae that may be present in the wood and prevents the growth of mold, ensuring that your table remains safe for your home or office.
Our Drying Process
At Sound Designs, our commitment to quality begins with our meticulous drying process. We start by air-drying our wood for 1-3 years, depending on the thickness of the slabs. This initial step allows the wood to naturally release a significant amount of moisture. Following the air-drying phase, we kiln dry the wood to achieve the optimal moisture content, ensuring the wood is stable and ready for crafting into furniture.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Most of our wood comes from downed and fallen trees found on Long Island’s “Gold Coast,” or North Shore, as well as from Ulster County in the Hudson Valley. By using locally sourced wood that would otherwise go to waste in many cases, we are helping to divert material from the waste stream.
