It’s the body of water that shapes this place, and no small part of our story.

We started by rescuing downed trees on the North Shore, Long Island’s Gold Coast, and turning them into live edge furniture. Since then we’ve added cabinetry and fine furniture.

ABOUT THE STUDIO
A workshop in the heart of the Gold Coast.
Sound Designs New York is a custom furniture studio in Glen Cove, NY. We build dining tables, conference tables, live edge countertops, cabinetry, desks, and one-off commissions for homes and businesses across Long Island and New York City.

Much of the wood we use comes from downed and fallen trees on the North Shore and Gold Coast: black walnut, white oak, maple, cherry, and ash.

MEET THE TEAM
Every piece passes through all of us.
Sound Designs got its official start in 2021. It really started much earlier.
Joe grew up in Queens, spending Saturdays at his grandparents’ house where a live edge redwood table sat in the dining room. The folds and wavy texture of the wood were mesmerizing. That table stayed with him.
He learned the craft in Seattle at Pratt Fine Arts Center, studying traditional joinery, hand tools, and welding. The name came from that time. Puget Sound out there. Long Island Sound back home.
A nor’easter in March 2018 gave him his first real material. Honey locust, American beech, red oak, and a katsura log from an old Gold Coast estate.
Today the shop is at 40 Pratt Oval in Glen Cove. Pratt in Seattle, Pratt Oval in Glen Cove. He did not plan that part.
FOUNDER
JOE FERRARA
Joel has been a cabinetmaker for over 30 years, specializing in high-end kitchens, closets, and built-ins. As the owner of JRL Cabinetry, much of his work has been on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the North Shore of Long Island.
Joel is the OG of ogee. Sorry. We’re big fans of woodworking puns. He studied mechanical engineering at NYIT and is always learning new techniques in the shop.

If you’re local, you may be familiar with Isaac from his work at Leo’s Deli, where he’s been known for serving up some of the meanest bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on a roll this side of the Shinnecock Canal.
But did you know he’s also a woodworker? The newest addition to the Sound Designs team, Isaac is drawn to projects that combine his love of analog sound equipment and woodworking. He even worked with us on a record display prototype, which was pretty cool.
Isaac has helped make deliveries stretching from Amagansett all the way to the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In the shop, he helps sand and finish everything from dining tables to custom fireplace mantels. He also keeps the shop neat and organized.

Carlos is an artist and painter who studied mechanical engineering at SUNY Buffalo. He helps with fabrication and deliveries.
