Gold Coast Coffee Table

2026

January 2026.

The year was still new when the snowstorms blanketed Long Island.

Our clients came to visit the shop on a chilly Sunday morning, as snowflakes fell and piled up in the parking lot at Pratt Oval.

When they arrived, I had the slab laid out on sawhorses. They got to see it in person and agreed this was the one they wanted for their project.

I'd had this slab for years. I salvaged it from a local tree, but we mostly make dining tables, and it was a bit short for one.

I always knew it would make a great coffee table.

Finally, its time had come.

The clients loved it and couldn't wait to see the finished piece.

About the table

Although you can't tell from the picture, it's over 60 inches long and massively heavy.

The slabs came from a local walnut tree and were well over two inches thick. The whole table is solid walnut.

Each leg is two walnut slabs laminated together, joined to the top with traditional joinery. No metal.

It's a simple design, kind of wabi sabi. It all rests on the beauty of the slab, which is certainly enough to carry it.

It's finished with several coats of Odie's Oil and Odie's Wood Butter, a durable, non-toxic finish.

Why we call it the Gold Coast Table

When we pulled up to deliver the table in February 2026, we were greeted at an intricate wrought iron gate.

The gate was clearly old and gave you a sense of the grandeur of the property.

The driveway, more like a road, took us through fields and a dense forest filled with old growth trees.

A dark, winding road led to the home. When we parked the van, we could see and hear the waves breaking against the rocks on the Long Island Sound, only a few hundred feet away.

It was a dark, icy winter night, and the stars were out in a clear sky.

Standing there, I got a sense of how incredible it must have been, and still is, to live on one of these Gold Coast estates. Even though it's a short drive from our shop in Glen Cove, it's a world unto itself.

There's something about the Gold Coast that inspires the work we do and gives it its own character.

Delivery

We mentioned it was heavy, right?

We carried it up a long flight of stairs and gingerly maneuvered it into the living room.

It was the perfect size!

Sometimes the simple things, like a live edge coffee table, can really make a room feel complete.
