Yakisugi Table, Sea Cliff

2026

In January 2026 we built our first Yakisugi-style table, for a home in Sea Cliff.

Yakisugi is an old Japanese technique where the surface of the wood is charred. In Japan it is used on exterior siding because the char protects the wood from fire, insects and weather.

The top is ash. We burned the boards outside, wire brushed the loose char off, cleaned them up and finished them with Odie's Oil, which gives the charred surface a deep sheen.

It stands at bar height on custom steel legs made by our metal fabricator.

The video shows the burning.
